The Coronavirus time capsule

What was The Coronavirus Time Capsule project?

The Coronavirus Time Capsule was an extraordinary initiative documenting young people’s experiences during the global coronavirus pandemic and lockdown. Spearheaded by Company Three in collaboration with partners including Nick Hern Books, The Association of National Youth Theatres, Unicorn Theatre, and Scottish Youth Theatre, the project united over 160 youth theatres worldwide in a shared creative endeavour.  The JYPA proudly joined this international effort, encouraging its members to be part of history by contributing their voices to this unique time capsule.

What did the project involve?

Each week, participants explored a new theme such as Home Life, Education, or Boredom and expressed their personal experiences by creating 15-second videos. These individual responses were then compiled and edited into weekly videos that became part of an evolving "time capsule." The cumulative format allowed the videos to grow and develop as the shutdown continued, capturing a living record of a changing world.

How did JYPA participate?

JYPA hosted weekly Zoom sessions to introduce the themes and provided guidance, including video tutorials from professional artists. The process was simple yet impactful:

1.   Mondays: Themes and artistic techniques were shared with participants.
2.   Tuesdays & Wednesdays: Participants created their videos.
3.   Thursdays: Videos were sent to a group leader for editing.
4.   Fridays: The final videos were shared on a private JYPA Facebook page and featured on Company Three’s website alongside submissions from other youth groups.

Why was this project important?

The Coronavirus Time Capsule served as a creative outlet for young people during a time of isolation, uncertainty, and upheaval. It gave them a platform to share their stories, connect with peers globally, and reflect on their lived experiences during an unprecedented period in history. For JYPA, it was an opportunity to foster community, creativity, and resilience among its members.

How could young people get involved?

Joining the project was simple. Participants (with parental permission) signed up by emailing their details and agreeing to digital safeguarding guidelines. This ensured a safe and supportive environment for creativity.
